Create a Setting (smallish, room-sized) (5 min)

Warning: Mature Themes

Writers group prompt. Part 1 of 4.

The room seemed oddly untouched by the ravages of time and the hands of vandals. Very little of the black mold that had crept into the other areas of the old hospital was present here. The once white ceiling tiles, though still crumbling were mostly intact and the floor only had a fine layer of dust covering it. Like most of the other rooms, only a few pieces of furniture remained, in this case a single miniature bed with child-sized leather straps that were worn and cracked with age.

The most significant feature of the room, however, was the mural covering the walls. Though faded and peeling in places, it depicted fairies and a magical forest on one side with an enchanted heath on the other. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection the initially charming tableau took on a more sinister edge. While the fae of the heath were cheerful and beautiful, dancing around and spreading pixie dust, the fae hidden among the trees were more predatory in nature. Their eyes glowed red and their teeth were sharp and gleaming. Who would’ve painted a child’s room like this?
